Bene grew out of a small carpentry workshop in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, which remained a woodworking business until the 1940s. The branch of the company established in Vienna in 1929 by Karl Bene manufactured office products, including wooden shelves for letters and folders.
In 1951, under the direction of Gottfried Bene, the Waidhofen facility was converted to industrial production of office furniture. In 1975, a new 15,000 m² facility was opened; in 1980, offices were opened in London and Moscow, and in 1988 the company moved to a headquarters designed by Laurids Ortner.
