The history of the Ćmielów works dates back to 1790, when a factory producing earthenware and faience operated here. In 1804, Count Jacek Małachowski established a larger manufactory, and porcelain was produced from 1838. After 1887, products were marked with the name „Ćmielów” or a swan mark among branches.
In 1920, the new owner gave the works the name Fabryka Porcelany i Wyrobów Ceramicznych w Ćmielowie, and in 1921 the company became a joint-stock company. During the interwar period, designers working for it included Bogdan Wendorf, Wincenty Potacki, Franciszek Kalfas, Józef Szewczyk and Lubomir Tomaszewski. In the early 1930s, Wendorf designed the „Kula” and „Płaski” services in the art deco style. The „Empire” service by B. Wysocki and J. Steckiewicz was commissioned by President Ignacy Mościcki; since 2012, it has been the official tableware of Belweder.
In 1946, the works were nationalised. In the 1950s and 1960s, porcelain figurines known as Ćmielów figurines were produced here. In 1997, the enterprise was privatised under the name Zakłady Porcelany „Ćmielów”. In 2013, the factories in Ćmielów and Chodzież were merged into the company Polskie Fabryki Porcelany „Ćmielów” i „Chodzież” S.A., whose majority shareholder is Zakłady Porcelany Stołowej „Lubiana”. Ćmielów Design Studio was established that same year, co-founded by Marek Cecuła. The largest collection of Ćmielów porcelain is held at the National Museum in Kielce.
