According to the manufacturer, in the early 1960s Dino Gavina decided to create new lamps, and production began in Merano, at the small workshop of Arturo Eisenkeil. Design history publications give 1962 as the founding year and also name Cesare Cassina among the founders. In 1964, the company moved to Bovezzo near Brescia.

Among others, Achille Castiglioni and his brother Pier Giacomo designed for Flos (the Arco lamp, 1962), as did Tobia & Afra Scarpa (Fantasma, 1968). The range also included Chiara Maria Bellini's Chiara lamp (1967). The Compasso d'Oro was awarded, among others, to Parentesi (1979) and Konstantin Grcic's May Day (2001).
