Friesche Stoel- en Houtwarenfabriek (Fristho) began producing chairs and small furniture in Huizum near Leeuwarden in 1920, and expanded to Franeker in 1923, where it became one of the main employers; Arnould Jean Baptist Merckx was its director. Chairs and furniture were mass-produced, with wood processed as mechanically as possible.

Thanks to its high quality, the company acquired clients such as Metz & Co and De Bijenkorf, producing furniture designed, among others, by Elmar Berkovich, Hendrik Wouda and Ida Falkenberg-Liefrinck, and subsequently becoming a manufacturer-designer in its own right. In 1954, it took over a factory in Bergschenhoek, and in 1971 moved to a new factory in Heerlen. It went bankrupt in 1978.
