The Cosack family was involved in Neheim’s metal industry from the first half of the nineteenth century: in 1833, Tappe + Cosack was established there, producing upholstery tacks and metal goods. The Gebrüder Cosack lighting and metalworks company was founded in 1848 by Theodor, Egon and Friedrich Cosack. Initially, lighting equipment, oil lamps and safety lamps were produced. In 1907, Adolf Cosack moved the plant to Lange Wende Street. The company is described as the oldest lighting factory in Neheim – a town which, according to 1905 Reich statistics, had the highest concentration of lamp-manufacturing plants.
In 1921, Cosack’sche Kartonagenfabrik was established – originally for packaging the products of the Cosack group, including lamps, nails, rivets and kitchen equipment. Since 1973, the packaging company has operated independently of the group’s other enterprises, as Cosack Druck + Verpackung.
After the Second World War, Gebrüder Cosack used the name GECOS for some time. The post-war range included desk, table, wall, pendant and floor lamps, as well as chandeliers and spotlights. Designer Karl-Heinz Kinsky is associated with many of the company’s models. Brand catalogues are known from as late as the end of the 1980s.
