The company was founded in 1948 in Sausalito, California, by Edith Heath (1911–2005) and Brian Heath (1911–2001). Edith Heath independently developed ceramic bodies and glazes using local clays, and the wares were handmade in the Sausalito workshop from the outset. The products had an artisanal character from the beginning, based on Edith Heath’s work on her own recipes for clays and glazes.

The original line was Coupe tableware, which has remained in production for around 75 years; the Rim line joined it in the early 1970s, followed by Plaza in 1992. From the late 1950s, architectural tiles became the company’s second area of activity alongside tableware; in 1971, tiles for Pasadena Art Museum earned the company an AIA gold medal. Oakland Museum of California devoted an exhibition, “Edith Heath: A Life in Clay”, to the founder’s work.

The Heaths ran the business personally for 45 years – in 1993 they handed day-to-day management to others, and in 2003 Catherine Bailey and Robin Petravic bought the company from Brian & Edith Heath Trust.
