The company was founded in 1823 in Vienna, at Weihburggasse, by Josef Lobmeyr senior (1792–1855); from 1835 it was a supplier to the imperial and royal court. Stefan Rath worked with Hoffmann, Loos and Wiener Werkstätte. Hans Harald Rath ran the company from 1938–1968; after the war, he took part in the reconstruction of Austrian glassmaking and co-founded the glass school in Kramsach. From 1968–2000, the company was run by Harald, Peter and Stefan Rath.
After the war, Lobmeyr made chandeliers, among others, for the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The products were marked with interlaced letters J, L, L, W, usually delicately engraved on the underside. MAK in Vienna holds an extensive collection.
