The company was founded by Melitta Bentz, who filed a utility model for a coffee filter on 20 June 1908; on 15 December that year, the company was entered in the commercial register in Dresden. The word mark “Melitta” was registered in 1911/1913, while the company’s recognisable red and green packaging was introduced in 1925. In 1929, the headquarters were moved to Minden, and in 1932, Melitta-Werke AG was established.

In 1936, the company patented a porcelain filter with an oval, conical base. Porcelain filters were manufactured for it by, among others, Porta-Keramikwerke and Langenthal, while in 1953, Porzellanfabrik Friesland was established within the group and became independent in the 1990s. Melitta Bentz died in 1950; the company remains a family-owned group based in Minden.
