The company was founded in 1910 in Burslem by William Robinson Midwinter; from 1932–1987 it operated as W. R. Midwinter Ltd. In the 1950s, it was headed by Roy Midwinter. Designers who worked with the manufacturer included Terence Conran, Jessie Tait, Hugh Casson, David Douglas, John Russell and Peter Scott.
The “Fashion” shape from the Stylecraft line was designed in 1955. John Russell’s “Riverside” pattern was produced from 1962–1973; one example is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection. In 1968, the company was acquired by J. & G. Meakin, which was bought by Wedgwood in 1970. The Midwinter name ceased to be used in 1987.
