The company was established in 1931 by British furniture manufacturer Frederick Parker and German inventor of a new furniture springing system, Willi Knoll. Frederick Parker (born 1845) began working as a chairmaker in 1869, and in 1898 moved his workshop to High Wycombe – a traditional furniture-making centre; he produced, among other things, furniture for ocean liners.
From the 1930s to the 1990s, the brand focused on furniture for the mass market. In 1950, the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange, and in 2004 it was delisted; following financial difficulties, it was acquired by Sofa Brands International.
