The company's history began in 1960, when Susan Williams-Ellis and Euan Cooper-Willis took over A. E. Gray & Co in Stoke-on-Trent. The following year, they also acquired Kirkhams Ltd, which was renamed Portmeirion Potteries Ltd. The earliest products bore the mark “Gray's Pottery Portmeirionware”, referring to the first of the acquired companies.

The factory's designs in its first decades were created primarily by Susan Williams-Ellis. Her designs emerged almost year by year: Malachite (1960), Moss Agate (1961), Talisman (1962), Totem (1963) and Magic City (1966). The Magic Garden pattern appeared in 1970, followed by Botanic Garden in 1972.

In 1988, the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange. In the 21st century, Portmeirion Group expanded its business by acquiring other ceramics brands: in 2009 it bought Spode and Royal Worcester, and in 2019 the Nambé brand.
