Since 1912, under the directorship of P.M. Cochius, the glassworks in Leerdam commissioned designs from artists and architects, including C.J. Lanooy, H.P. Berlage, A.D. Copier and F. Maydam. Sets of glassware were marked with the designer's acid-etched signature. Andries Dirk Copier (1901–1991) worked in Leerdam from 1914 to 1971, from 1927 as artistic director. In 1922–1923, he introduced the series of hand-formed unique pieces “Unica”, marked with an inscription engraved on the underside bearing the series number and the designer's name.
From 1938 to 2002, the glassworks belonged to the Vereenigde Glasfabrieken group in Schiedam; in 2002 it was transferred to Libbey, and in 2008 to the Royal Delft group. The work of the glassworks is shown in Bert Haanstra's film “Glas” (1958), which won an Oscar in 1959. Glass from Leerdam is held in the collections of Cooper Hewitt, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Nationaal Glasmuseum in Leerdam.
