Staff & Schwarz was founded in 1945 in Lemgo by Alfred Staff (1908–1989) and Otto Schwarz (1902–1951); from 1946 it produced iron lamps, and after 1951 Staff was the sole owner. The company received more than 200 design awards. In 1966 it introduced the Variolux dimmer, and in 1967 the Lite-Trac track system.
Designers for Staff included Rolf Krüger, Motoko Ishii, Kazuo Motozawa, Arnold Berges, Gerhard Beigel and Alfred Kalthoff. In 1993–1994 the company was taken over by the Zumtobel Group; the name Zumtobel Staff was used until 2006.
