About the manufacturer

Czechoslovakia

The name Supraphon was registered as a trademark in 1932 – it was used by the company Ultraphon for export purposes. After the Second World War, Ultraphon was nationalised and renamed Gramofonové závody.

In 1961, the company adopted the name Gramofonové závody – Supraphon and released its first stereo records; in 1969, the name was shortened to Supraphon. In Czechoslovakia, it was one of three state record labels, alongside Panton and Opus. In 1981, Supraphon began digital recording. In January 2025, the label was acquired by Sony Music. Supraphon has therefore operated continuously, under various names and forms of ownership, from the interwar period to the present day.

The historical data comes from encyclopaedias and still requires verification on the label’s website; the sources do not describe the cover designers. At MIDMOD, items bearing the Supraphon logo – vinyl records and related objects from the Czechoslovak era – appear as individual pieces from the secondary market. They form part of the material culture of post-war Czechoslovakia, alongside furniture, glass and lighting from the period.
