Tecno was founded in 1953 by twins Osvaldo and Fulgenzio Borsani. The company grew out of the family Atelier Borsani in Varedo, run by their father Gaetano Borsani (1886–1955) from the early 1920s, and marked the transition from craftsmanship to industrial production. An important commission during the new company's early years was the furnishing of the ENI conglomerate of Enrico Mattei in San Donato Milanese.
Tecno's first models include D70 (1954), designed by Osvaldo Borsani and awarded at the 10th Triennale in Milan, and P40 (1955/1956). Later works include the Graphis system (1967; Osvaldo Borsani and E. Gerli), presented publicly at the 14th Triennale in Milan in 1968, the Modus programme (1972), and the Alitalia seat system (1982–1984), which received the Compasso d’Oro award in 1984. In 1970, the company established its internal design centre, Centro Progetti Tecno.
In 1966, Tecno, together with Cassina, Arflex and Bernini, co-founded the magazine “Ottagono”. In 2017, the company acquired an 80% stake in Zanotta; the two companies retained separate management boards after the transaction.
