Alessandro Mendini was born in Milan on 16 August 1931 and died there on 18 February 2019. In 1959, he graduated in architecture from Politecnico di Milano; he began his professional career at the studio of designer Marcello Nizzoli.

He was editor of the magazines “Casabella” (1970–1976), “Modo” (from 1977) and “Domus” (1979–1985). He worked with Studio Alchimia and, according to Cooper Hewitt, in 1980 was among the co-founders of the Memphis group, alongside Ettore Sottsass, Branzi, Bedin and De Lucchi. He co-founded Domus Academy and in 1989 established Atelier Mendini with his brother Francesco. His furniture designs include the Lassú armchair (1974) and the Proust armchair, designed in 1978 – an example made in 1998–1999 is held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. For Alessi, he designed the Anna G. kitchen accessories.
