Alfredo Barbini was born on Murano on 13 January 1912 and died there on 13 February 2007. As a young master glassmaker, he worked at Zecchin & Martinuzzi glassworks, and by 1945 was the first master at VAMSA. He then became artistic director of Gino Cenedese glassworks, for which he created glass sculptures and so-called aquariums – blocks of colourless glass with submerged colourful elements of marine fauna and flora.

In 1950, he founded his own glassworks, run with his children Oceania and Flavio, specialising in solid glass, Sommerso and, from the 1970s, murrine and thin blown glass. He took part in the Venice Biennale in 1948, 1950, 1954, 1960, 1962 and 1968.
