Carlo Mollino was born on 6 May 1905 in Turin, where he obtained his architecture diploma in 1931. From 1949 he taught at the Faculty of Architecture in Turin, and in 1953 became a full professor. His early architectural projects include the design of Casa Miller.

His furniture designs include the Ardea armchair (1944), Reale table (1946), produced by Zanotta, the Gilda model (1954) and Arabesque. His furniture was made mainly by Apelli & Varesio. As an architect, he designed, among other things, the Teatro Regio di Torino building, constructed between 1965 and 1973 and completed in the year of the architect’s death. The Turin apartment he furnished between 1960 and 1968 now operates as the Casa Mollino museum.

In addition to architecture and furniture design, he was involved in photography, motor racing and skiing, and from 1956 also aerobatic flying. In this way, he combined his work as an architect, designer and academic lecturer with many pursuits outside his profession. He died on 27 August 1973 in Turin, aged 68, in his home city.
