Charles Pollock was born on 20 June 1930 and grew up in Detroit, where he attended Cass Technical High School. He studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. In the 1950s, he worked, among others, for Donald Deskey and in George Nelson’s office, and designed furniture from the “swag leg” series for Herman Miller. He then joined Knoll.

For Knoll, he designed the 657 Lounge armchair, known as the Sling Chair – dated 1961 by the manufacturer – as well as the Pollock Executive Chair office armchair from the 1250 series, produced since 1965. In 1978, he designed the Flexa system for Olivetti Office Systems, and in 1982 the Penelope model for the Italian company Castelli. Towards the end of his life, he worked with Bernhardt Design, for which the CP Lounge armchair was created in 2012.

Pollock died on 20 August 2013 in New York, aged 83, following a fire in his flat and studio in Queens. At MIDMOD, his designs appear as pieces from the secondary market.
