Florence Knoll, née Schust, was born on 24 May 1917 in Saginaw, Michigan, and died on 25 January 2019 in Coral Gables, Florida. She studied at Cranbrook Academy of Art under Eliel Saarinen, at the Architectural Association in London and at the Illinois Institute of Technology under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; she worked for Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer.

From 1943, she designed for the furniture company founded by Hans Knoll; in 1946, she married him and became co-owner of Knoll Associates. After her husband's death in 1955, she ran the company and designed chairs, sofas, tables and chests of drawers. In 1960, she stepped down as head of the company, directing the design department until 1965.
