František Vízner was born in 1936 in Prague and died in 2011. He studied at glassmaking schools in Nový Bor (1951–1953) and Železný Brod (1953–1956), followed by studies from 1956 to 1962 at Prague's UMPRUM, in the studio of Karel Štipl.

From 1962 to 1967, he was a designer at the Sklo Union factories near Teplice, where he created pressed glass series. From 1967 to 1977, he worked with hot-formed glass at the glassworks in Škrdlovice, and from 1977 he ran his own studio in Žďár nad Sázavou. This was where his most characteristic works were created: massive, sanded and frosted bowls and vases with austere forms. He also designed glass for architecture, including glass tiles for the Karlovo náměstí station of the Prague Metro.

His work was shown in the exhibition “New Glass: A Worldwide Survey” at the Corning Museum of Glass (1979), and in 2009 the same museum organised a solo exhibition, “Masters of Studio Glass: František Vízner”. In 2009, he was inducted into the Czech Grand Design Hall of Fame, and in 2010 he received the Designer of the Year title for a drinkware collection for Bohemia Machine Glass.
