Gilbert Rohde was born in 1894 and died in 1944; he spent his entire life in New York and the surrounding area. He attended courses at the Art Students League and Grand Central School of Art. A trip to France and Germany in 1927 marked the beginning of his transition from advertising illustration to design.
From 1932 until his death, he advised Herman Miller president D.J. De Pree on design, marketing and production, introducing modern design to the company. He brought modernism to a dozen or so furniture manufacturers, including Heywood-Wakefield and Widdicomb. His biomorphic tables and desks for Herman Miller were the first furniture of this kind produced in the USA.
