Gino Sarfatti was born in Venice in 1912 and died in 1985. In 1939, he founded the Milan-based company Arteluce, which produced lamps made of brass and glass, often with adjustable articulated arms. From the mid-1950s, plexiglass was used in them, and halogen light sources in the early 1970s.

Arteluce lamps received Compasso d’Oro awards in 1954 (model 559) and 1955 (model 1055), as well as the Grand Prix Triennale in 1954. In 1958, the 2097 chandelier was created: each bulb is mounted on a separate horizontal arm, and the wires converge at a central stem; the model is available in versions for 30 and 50 bulbs and is now produced by Flos.

In 1973, Sarfatti sold Arteluce to Flos, which holds the brand archive. His work is held in the MoMA collection and was shown in six exhibitions at the museum from 1954–2013, and in 2012 the Triennale Design Museum in Milan organised his retrospective.
