Hans Coray was born on 9 June 1906 in Wald in the canton of Zurich and died on 22 November 1991. In 1929, he obtained a doctorate in Romance philology from the University of Zurich, and from 1932 to 1938 he studied, among other things, design. In the 1940s, he was associated with Zurich’s circles of Concrete art and Dada, and from 1950 he ran his own studio.

His best-known design is the Landi chair, entered in 1938 for a competition to design the official chair of the Swiss National Exhibition, held in Zurich in 1939. The stackable chair was made from perforated aluminium sheet. In the 1950s, it was produced by Mewa, and since 2014 the model has been part of Vitra’s range. A Landi chair is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Landi remains Coray’s most important design and is still in production.

For Wohnbedarf, Coray designed, among other things, the Ponton table and a garden chair. His body of work combines the experience of a humanist and artist with an interest in new materials and serial production.
