He was born in 1941 in Zamość, into a Polish-Turkish family – his mother was Polish and his father Turkish. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the studio of Prof. Henryk Tomaszewski; he obtained his diploma in 1968. Soon after graduating, he won a competition to design a poster for the 100th anniversary of Lenin’s birth.
He designed nearly one thousand film posters, as well as theatre and social posters. He also worked on book covers and illustrations, theatre set designs, company logos, postage stamps and other forms of applied graphic design. His best-known film posters include designs for Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Andrei Rublev”, George Lucas’s “Star Wars”, Miloš Forman’s “Amadeus”, Sidney Lumet’s “Serpico”, Roman Polański’s “Frantic”, Kazimierz Kutz’s “The Beads of One Rosary” and Marek Piwowski’s “The Cruise”. In 1989, he created a portrait of Lech Wałęsa as “Person of the Year 1989” for the Barcelona daily newspaper “El Periódico”.
He received, among others, five awards in The Hollywood Reporter film poster competition in Los Angeles and the Tadeusz Trepkowski Award; his work was also recognised at the National Biennial of Polish Poster. He died in February 2018 in Warsaw at the age of 77.
