Lisa Johansson-Pape was born on 21 January 1907 and died on 5 October 1989. In 1927, she graduated from the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki. In 1937, she designed furniture for the Stockmann department store, and from 1942 she designed lighting fixtures for Orno, a lamp factory owned by Stockmann.
Lighting became the main area of her work, encompassing both the design of individual fixtures and interior lighting planning. She was a co-founder of the Finnish Illuminating Engineering Society and designed lighting for around 150 churches. In 1954, she designed an opal glass pendant lamp for Iittala, and in 1963 a series of vases for the same manufacturer, demonstrating that her work also extended to functional glassware. For more than three decades, from 1951 to 1985, she was the artistic director of the association Friends of Finnish Handicraft.
Her work was recognised at the 9th Triennale in Milan in 1951, and in 1954 she was awarded the Triennale gold medal. In 1957, she received the Finnish Pro Finlandia medal.
