Maria Chomentowska was born in 1924 in Warsaw and died in 2013 in Lublin. She studied painting and then at the Faculty of Interior Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Jan Kurzątkowski, but did not defend her diploma thesis. From 1951–1976, she worked at the Institute of Industrial Design (IWP). From 1976, for around 20 years, she designed the interiors of the Catholic University of Lublin, including the Cardinal Wyszyński Hall.
In 1956, she designed the “Płucka” chair in bent plywood and “Pająk” (type 288), developed at IWP and manufactured by Fabryka Mebli Giętych w Radomsku. In 1957, she designed a lounge armchair with an ash frame and a seat supported by webbing. The type 200-102 chair from 1959, made of beech and moulded plywood, is held in the collection of Vitra Design Museum. From 1963, she designed school furniture for the Ministry of Education – of 133 designs, 53 entered mass production, including at Poznańska Fabryka Mebli.
Her work was shown at the Second Interior Exhibition (1957) and the Milan Triennale (1961). She received first prize in a children's furniture competition (1961), as well as awards from the Minister of Culture and Art (1957 and 1969). Her furniture is held in the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw.
