Mario Bellini was born on 1 February 1935 in Milan. In 1959, he graduated from Politecnico di Milano. From 1961 to 1963, he headed the design department at La Rinascente; from 1962, he ran his own studio, and from 1963 to 1991 he was Olivetti’s chief consultant.

His Ivrea table (1960), produced by Pedretti, Gavina and Knoll, received the Compasso d'Oro in 1962. For C&B Italia, he designed Amanta (1970) and Le Bambole (1972), for Cassina the Cab chair (1977), and for Brionvega Volans 17 (1968). Divisumma 18 was among his designs for Olivetti. Bellini is an eight-time Compasso d'Oro winner – he received the last of these awards in 2001.

In 1987, the Museum of Modern Art in New York organised a retrospective of his work; at the time, the museum held 25 of his works in its collection. As an architect, Bellini is associated, among other things, with the design of the Islamic Art Gallery at the Louvre (2010).
