Rodolfo Bonetto was born on 18 September 1929 in Milan. He did not complete formal design studies and was self-taught. Between 1949 and 1959, he performed as a jazz drummer before devoting himself fully to design. From 1961 to 1965, he taught at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, and from 1974 to 1979 at ISIA in Rome.

His work focused primarily on industrial design. His projects included Sfericlock (1962) for Veglia-Borletti, Auctor Multiplex (1967) for Olivetti, the Linea 1 (1969) televisions for Autovox and TV 1202 (1972) for Voxson, the interior of the Fiat 131 (1979), and Rotor (1987) for SIP. Furniture accounts for a smaller part of his work and includes Boomerang (1968) for Flexform and Melaina (1970) for Driade.

Bonetto received eight Compasso d’Oro awards, including those in 1964, 1967, 1970, 1979, 1981 and 1984. From 1971 to 1973, he was president of ADI, and from 1981 to 1983 he headed ICSID. His work combined design for the electronics and automotive industries with teaching at design schools in Germany and Italy. He died on 28 March 1991 in Milan.
