Roman Cieślewicz was born in 1930 in Lviv and died in 1996 in Antony, France. Between 1949 and 1954, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, and from 1955 worked in Warsaw as a graphic artist and poster designer. In 1963, he went West – he worked in Essen and in Italy for Italsider in Genoa, after which he settled in Paris. From 1966 to 1969, he was art director of “Elle” magazine, and from 1969 to 1972 of the M.A.F.I.A. agency. From 1972, he worked as an independent artist; from 1975 he collaborated with Centre Pompidou and ran a studio at ESAG in Paris.

The National Museum in Poznań oversees his archive and runs a website devoted to the artist. Cieślewicz’s career spans two stages: the Warsaw period, associated with Polish poster art and the press of the 1950s, and the Paris period, during which he worked for the press, advertising agencies and cultural institutions, and taught successive generations of graphic designers.
