Stefan Wewerka was born on 27 October 1928 in Magdeburg and died on 14 September 2013 in Berlin. He was the son of the sculptor Rudolf Wewerka. After the war, he studied architecture at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Berlin under Max Taut; he worked, among others, in Hans Scharoun’s office.
From the late 1950s, he worked as a freelance artist; in the 1960s, he began cutting apart and reconstructing chairs and other everyday objects, while in the 1970s he mainly created etchings and collaborated with Dieter Roth. From 1978, he designed furniture and fashion for Tecta. His principal work consists of sculptural chairs, including the three-legged B1 chair.
