Vittorio Gregotti was born in Novara in 1927. In 1951, as a student of Ernesto N. Rogers, he attended the CIAM congress in Hoddesdon, and in 1952 graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan. He was thus trained in the Milanese modernist milieu centred around Rogers. In 1953 he opened his first office with L. Meneghetti and G. Stoppino, and in 1974 founded Gregotti Associati International.

He was associated with the architectural press: he worked on the editorial staff of “Casabella Continuità”, edited by Rogers from 1953–1965, and from 1982–1996 was editor-in-chief of “Casabella”. In 1975–1976 he was curator of the visual arts section of the Venice Biennale.

His completed works include the Z.E.N. complex in Palermo (from 1969), the University of Calabria (1973–1979), the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona (1985–1989) and Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon (1988–1993). In 2000 he received the Gold Medal of the Italian Republic for services to science and culture. His practice therefore realised designs in Italy, Spain and Portugal. He died on 15 March 2020 in Milan from COVID-19.
