Xavier Pauchard was born on 8 March 1880 in Saint-Léger-sous-Beuvray and died on 28 June 1948 in Autun. In 1905, he founded the “X Pauchard” workshops and became interested in hot-dip galvanising, which protected sheet metal from corrosion.
In 1927, he registered the Tolix brand, under which he designed furniture made of pressed sheet metal, including the durable, stackable A chair. In 1935, A chairs were placed aboard the transatlantic liner Normandie. The A chair is in the collections of Vitra Design Museum, MoMA and Centre Pompidou; in 1956, his son Jean Pauchard transformed it into the A56 armchair.
