Zbigniew Rychlicki was born in 1922 in Orzechówka and died in 1989 in Bratislava. He began his studies in 1946 at the Kraków Institute of Fine Arts (later PWSSP), and obtained his diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków about a decade later. In 1947, he worked at Wytwórnia Filmów Rysunkowych in Łódź.
He was the artistic director of the Nasza Księgarnia publishing house and illustrated more than 150 titles, including “Panią Twardowską” (1955), “Klechdy domowe” (1960) and “U złotego źródła” (1967). From 1957, he created the character of Teddy Floppy Ear for texts by Czesław Janczarski, and from 1975 he designed characters and sets for films produced by the Łódź-based Se-ma-for studio. Over approximately four decades of work at Nasza Księgarnia, he helped shape the appearance of Polish children's books.
In 1982, he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award, presented by IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) in the illustration category. He is considered one of the creators of the Polish school of illustration of the second half of the 20th century; in his work, folk motifs combine with influences from pop art and psychedelia.
