The factory was founded on 25 November 1873 in Helsinki's Toukola district as a branch of the Swedish manufacturer Rörstrand. In 1916, it passed into Finnish ownership. The factory's first artist was Thure Öberg (until 1935), and from 1932 its art department was headed by Kurt Ekholm.

Those associated with Arabia included Kaj Franck (Kilta dinner service, 1953), Ulla Procopé, Birger Kaipiainen, Toini Muona, Friedl Kjellberg, Esteri Tomula, Richard Lindh, Raija Uosikkinen, Kaarina Aho, Inkeri Leivo and Heljä Liukko-Sundström. From 1947–1990, the company belonged to the Wärtsilä group; in 1990, it passed to Hackman and subsequently became part of the Iittala group, which was acquired by Fiskars in 2007.
