The Barovier family has been recorded on Murano since 1324, and as glassmakers since 1343. In 1920, Ercole and Nicolò Barovier took over management of the family glassworks from their father, Benvenuto; from 1927, Ercole was the chief designer, and from 1934, the sole owner. Works from this period include the Primavera series (1930) in craquelé glass and the “Lenti” vase (1940) with gold in layered glass.
In 1936, Vetreria Artistica Barovier merged with Ferro Toso glassworks; the company adopted its current name in 1942. In the 1940s and 1950s, it received awards for its murrine technique, and in 1962 it made a chandelier for the Swiss embassy in Paris. Its headquarters are at Fondamenta dei Vetrai 28 in Murano; in 2015, Rinaldo Invernizzi acquired a majority stake.
