Dansk was founded in 1954 in Martha and Ted Nierenberg’s garage in Great Neck, New York State. The company operated as a brand and distributor – its products were made, among other places, in Denmark, France and Japan.

The chief designer for around 30 years, from 1954, was Jens Quistgaard, creator of, among other things, the Kobenstyle line of enamelled steel tableware (1955). Other designers for Dansk included Torun Bülow-Hübe (1960), Gunnar Cyrén (Medley series, 1968) and Lorenzo Porcelli (1980). Quistgaard’s “Variations V” carving set (designed in 1955, made in Copenhagen in 1968) is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Products were marked on the underside with the designers’ initials – IHQ or JHQ for Quistgaard, GC for Cyrén, LP for Porcelli, “Torun” for Bülow-Hübe – together with the inscription “DANSK DESIGN” and the country of manufacture (e.g. “DENMARK” or “FINLAND”). In 1985, the brand was acquired by Dansk Acquisition Corp., in 1991 by Brown-Forman (Lenox), in 2009 by Clarion Capital, in 2021 by Food52, and in 2026 by Form Portfolios.
