The company was founded in 1876 in Christiania (now Oslo) by goldsmith David Andersen (1843–1901); after his death, it was run by his son Arthur. From 1887/1888, it had an enamelling workshop where, among other techniques, champlevé enamel (gruveemalje), stained-glass enamel (vindusemalje) and cell enamel (celle-emalje) were used. From 1893, Gustav Gaudernack designed for the company.
After the Second World War, from 1959, the jewellery workshop was run by Uni David-Andersen. In the 1960s, Bjørn Sigurd Østern designed for the company and the Trollsmykke series was created, while Toril Bjorg worked for the company from 1972–1979. The premises on Trondheimsveien closed in 2001; the company operates as a joint-stock company.
