The company was founded on 1 April 1949 as “Franz Wulf & Co Plasticwarenfabrik”. Its founder was Franz Wulf, and according to Wikipedia, its first production took place in Greven. The company has been based in Emsdetten since 1956.

Its first market success came in 1953 with a butterfly-shaped drip catcher fitted onto the spout of a coffee pot. The “EMSA Plastic” trademark was registered in 1958, and in 1960 the company introduced its first tableware range. Over time, its product range expanded to include thermos flasks and vacuum flasks, food storage containers, kitchenware and garden accessories – plastic products intended for everyday use in the home.

Since June 2016, Emsa has belonged to the international Groupe SEB. The company changed its name during its history, but sources give different dates for this change, so they are not cited here.

At MIDMOD, Emsa products – most often thermos flasks, jugs and containers from the post-war period – appear as individual pieces from the secondary market.
