Ercol grew out of Furniture Industries, which had operated since 1920 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Designer Lucian Ercolani (born 1888) had been associated with the company since 1920; the firm remained family-owned throughout the century.
In 1944, as part of the government’s Utility Furniture programme, Ercol received an order for 100 000 Windsor chairs made from steam-bent elm. In 1946, the company’s furniture was shown at the “Britain Can Make It” exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and in 1947, mass-produced Windsor chairs went on sale. In 2010, Ercol received the Design Guild Mark distinction. Since 2002, the factory has been located in Princes Risborough.
