The Studio Couch sofa, designed by Lucian Ercolani for the British furniture manufacturer Ercol, is one of the most recognisable designs of post-war European furniture. The model was introduced to the manufacturer’s range in the 1950s and continued to be produced throughout the following decade, becoming a symbol of the British approach to design—simple, functional, and timeless.

The frame was made from a combination of elm and beech wood. The wide backrest in solid elm beautifully showcases the wood’s natural grain, while the distinctive bent elements and slender beech spindles are the result of Ercol’s wood-bending technology. This combination of two wood species became one of the brand’s defining features.

The sofa is preserved in original, very good condition, with minimal signs of use in the form of light scratches and scuffs.

The sofa’s form is perfectly aligned with the mid-century modern aesthetic. Its slender silhouette, gently shaped armrests, and distinctive spindle sides give the piece a light appearance despite its substantial dimensions. Thanks to its deep seat and high backrest, the sofa remains a comfortable piece for everyday use while also making a strong statement in an interior.

Lucian Ercolani (1888–1976) was an Italian-British designer and the founder of the Ercol brand. He became known for combining traditional craftsmanship with modern production technology, creating furniture with a lightweight form and exceptional durability. Founded in 1920, Ercol remains one of Britain’s most highly regarded furniture manufacturers, and many of Ercolani’s designs continue to be part of the brand’s range to this day.
