Mid-Century teak desk, Sola Møbler, Norway, 1960s
Description
This teak Model 111 desk, manufactured by the Norwegian company Sola Møbler in the 1960s, is an excellent example of Scandinavian design, combining functionality with a light, organic form. The design is distinguished by the characteristic shape of its desktop, with a softly flowing line, and subtly contoured details typical of Nordic modernism of the period.
The piece is made of teak with a warm tone and elegant grain. Particular attention is drawn to the cabinet корпус construction with two cupboards—one of them featuring a less commonly seen semicircular form that gives the piece a more fluid, architectural character. This detail clearly distinguishes the desk from the more geometric designs of the era.
The piece has undergone meticulous, professional restoration involving the removal of the old finishes, staining, and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with more than 20 years of experience. As a result, the desk presents beautifully and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.
Model 111 was designed for everyday use. The large worktop provides a comfortable working area, while the cupboards can be closed to keep everything organised without compromising the light appearance of the overall structure. The piece also looks attractive from the back, allowing it to be placed centrally in a room rather than only against a wall. This is a characteristic feature of the better-designed Scandinavian desks of the 1960s.
The form is restrained, but not austere. Organic lines soften the minimalist character of the design and allow the desk to work equally well in modern interiors and more classic vintage arrangements. This is the kind of piece that attracts attention through its proportions and quality of craftsmanship rather than through an overly decorative form.
Sola Møbler was among the Norwegian manufacturers advancing postwar Scandinavian design, focusing on high-quality cabinetmaking and functional solutions for modern interiors. Today, Model 111 remains an interesting example of Norwegian modernism from the period when Northern European design was at its height.
