Description

A teak chest of drawers designed by Kai Kristiansen and manufactured in the 1960s by the Danish company Feldballes Møbelfabrik. The teak has a warm tone and pronounced grain, particularly visible on the sides. The chest has four drawers. Their distinctive feature is the semicircular, wood-carved pulls that are a hallmark of Kristiansen’s designs. They are comfortable to use and preserve the clean lines of the fronts. The top drawer is lockable and comes with its original brass key. The whole piece rests on slender, tapered legs, giving it a light appearance despite its simple, compact form.

The drawers are made of light-coloured wood and joined with dovetail joints, demonstrating the high quality of Danish cabinetmaking of the period. The chest has versatile proportions. It would work well in a bedroom, hallway or living room, as well as serving as a bedside table next to a large bed or as a practical piece of furniture in a study.

Kai Kristiansen (b. 1929) is one of Denmark’s most important furniture designers of the mid-20th century. After training as a cabinetmaker, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under Kaare Klint, and opened his own studio at the age of 26. His best-known designs include Chair No. 42 and the modular FM Reolsystem shelving system. Feldballes Møbelfabrik was a Danish furniture manufacturer that produced Kristiansen’s case furniture in the 1950s and 1960s, including the FM Reolsystem.

The piece has undergone a meticulous, professional restoration involving the removal of the old finishes, staining and lacquer finishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced cabinetmaker with more than 20 years of experience. As a result, the chest looks wonderful and will serve its new owner for many years without concern about damage or deterioration through everyday use.
