The company's beginnings are linked to a trading house established in Vyborg by Johan Friedrich Hackman, an emigrant from Lübeck. A knife factory operated at the Sorsakoski estate. From 1902, it produced inexpensive cutlery forged from a single piece of steel; stainless steel was introduced in the 1920s, and in the 1950s Sorsakoski also produced jugs and saucepans.
In the 1960s, Hackman collaborated with designers Kaj Franck, Adolf Babel and Bertel Gardberg. In 1965, Tapio Wirkkala designed a puukko knife, marked on the blade “HACKMAN FINLAND STAINLESS / TAPIO WIRKKALA”; an example is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection. Today, Hackman is a trademark of the Fiskars group.
