The glassworks was established in 1762 as Christiania Glasmagasins verk by Det Norske Compagnie on the Mo farm in Jevnaker; production began in 1765. Subsequent owners were the king (1776), Kanalkompaniet (1782) and the state (1814); in 1824 the works were sold at auction, from 1852 belonged to the Berg brothers, and in 1898 passed to Christiania Glasmagasin. The company still operates today as a joint-stock company.

After 1945, designers for Hadeland included Willy Johansson (from 1947), Arne Jon Jutrem, Hermann Bongard, Severin Brørby, Benny Motzfeldt (from 1955; the 1960 Benny series), Gro Bergslien (from 1963) and Edla Freij (from c. 1968; the Surf dinner service). Lars Fletre worked here from 1941, creating, among other things, sandblasted vases and the Bacchus decanter. The glassworks used hand-blown and pressed glass, overlay, sandblasting, etching and cutting; the “K-glass” line was introduced around 1950.

Products were marked with the “Hadeland” signature and “Hadeland, Norway” labels – black-and-white paper or black-and-gold foil. The National Museum in Oslo holds nearly 450 objects from Hadeland.
