The company's roots go back to Franz Hustadt's joinery in Neheim-Hüsten (now Arnsberg), operating around 1911. From 1952, Walter Hustadt (born 1926) developed the serial production of lamp components there. Information about the company's history comes from a single detailed study on a website devoted to vintage lighting.
In 1960, the company employed more than 140 people, and in 1962 it took over the Sölken & Co. plant. In 1966, the factory site covered approximately 35,000 m². By the late 1960s, Hustadt employed around 400 people, produced approximately 1.5 million lamps annually in almost 1,000 models, and exported them to countries in Europe, Africa, the Americas and Japan.
The designer Klaus Hempel worked with the company; his 3925/015 and 3927/015 lamps received the iF Design Award in 1983. In 1978, Hans-Walter Hustadt founded a separate company, Briloner Leuchten, in Brilon. Neheim was an important centre of lamp production – since 1895, it had also been home to Gebr. Kaiser & Co., a maker of Kaiser Idell lamps. At MIDMOD, Hustadt lamps appear as individual pieces from the secondary market.
