JOC is short for J.O. Carlsson Möbelindustri – a family furniture factory in Vetlanda. Designer Karl-Erik Ekselius (1914–1998) was associated with the company and, according to Möbeldesignmuseum, took over its management in 1970 and ran it until 1987. Ekselius studied under Carl Malmsten, and from 1938 studied in Germany under Prof. Fritz Breuhaus.

A turning point in his career was the H55 exhibition in Helsingborg in 1955, where he presented chairs, a table and a sofa. The F 139 armchair with Astrid Sampe fabrics was selected for the furnishing of the United Nations library in New York, while the Mondo series in aluminium and leather was developed with Sapa in the 1960s and 1970s.
