Herman Kähler (1808–1884) established the workshop in Næstved in 1839. In 1872, the business was taken over by his sons, Herman A. Kähler (1846–1917) and Carl Fredrik Kähler, and a new factory was established in 1875. The manufacturer became known for its red glaze with a metallic lustre, developed, according to some sources, in 1888 and presented at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889.

From 1893 to 1948, for more than half a century, Kähler worked with Svend Hammershøi, while Jens Thirslund was artistic director from 1913 to 1940; a vase designed by him is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. From 1940, the workshop was run by Nils Kähler (1906–1979) and Herman Jørgen Kähler (1904–1996), who continued the family’s ceramic tradition.

The pieces were marked on the underside with the monogram “HAK”. The manufacturer remained in the hands of the family until 1974, when the factory was sold to the Næstved municipality; in 2007, it was acquired by Frantz Longhi, and in 2018 the brand became part of Rosendahl Design Group. Throughout this period, the manufacturer remained based in Næstved.
