Kartell was founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli; architect Anna Castelli Ferrieri is recognised as its co-founder. The company’s first product was a car ski rack. Joe Colombo designed the 4801 armchair for Kartell in 1963. The company’s headquarters are in Noviglio.

Anna Castelli Ferrieri was art director from 1976–1987. She designed the modular Componibili storage units in ABS (square version 1967, cylindrical version 1969), the 5500 series (1977), the 4300 table (1982) – the first made entirely from injection-moulded ABS – and the 4870 chair, awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1986. In 1988, the Castellis sold the company to their son-in-law, Claudio Luti.
