The company was founded in 1945 under the name Tehokaluste Oy; one of its founders was Matti S. Martela. Office furniture was designed from the outset according to the formats of the A series, and the company introduced direct sales to customers instead of selling through furniture shops.
In the 1950s, Matti S. Martela developed the idea of modularity – standardised furniture that could be easily combined into different sets, expanding the range from individual pieces to complete office fit-outs. Martela has factories in Nummela, Finland, Bodafors, Sweden, and Warsaw, among other locations; it has been listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange since 1986.
